Parents of autistic children got a hell of a wake up call to start 2021. The Ford Government has introduced plans to move the Ontario Autism Program back to a “benchmark” system. What’s worse is that it’ll be ministry staff (in this case care coordinators) not clinicians that will be responsible for assessing a child’s needs in the Ontario Autism Program.
Back in 2016 parents successfully fought the Wynne Government for the abolishment of the benchmark system which was seen as a cost saving measure, and left many autistic kids without support. The reindroduction of a benchmark system on top of the fact that it’s ministry staff that are determining the needs of autistic children is a huge slap in the face to all the families that have fought so hard for their children.
More to come soon.
