Last week I posted a blog that raised a question on whether it is legal for unvaccinated staff to be working with children in schools, and what the courts have been saying regarding accommodating kids during the pandemic. There’s late word today that the Ministry of Education will be mandating disclosure of vaccination status of educational staff and visitors to schools. The York Region District School Board updated it’s health and safety protocols late today to include the following:
Ontario Premier Doug Ford during his presser today did state that it’ll be up to each individual front line organization to develop policies regarding what to do with unvaccinated staff, and that the province will make vaccinations mandatory if that fails, or the situation on the ground changes. Ford also stated when asked about education, that the boards and the province have a duty to ensure the safest environment possible for students in class. This is something the courts have been very clear on.
What this will look like going forward is anyone’s guess, however the province today outlined a vaccination passport system that will take effect September 22nd, 2021, which is weeks into the new school year with the fourth wave of COVID-19 hitting the province.
Stay tuned to this blog for further updates regarding the situation in education. I will be following this very closely in the days and weeks to come.
